Pool Finishes: Mosaic, Tile or Liner

Glass mosaic, ceramic or porcelain tiles and PVC liners compared for looks, durability, installation and repairability in a pool shell.

A pool finish is not just decoration. It has to withstand daily temperature swings, disinfectants, sunlight, constant water pressure and cleaning brushes. At the same time it sets the colour of the water, the overall look of the pool and how it feels underfoot. The three most popular options are glass mosaic, ceramic or porcelain tiles and PVC liners, and each answers different priorities.

Glass mosaic: freedom of shape and colour

Small mosaic pieces follow curved surfaces, steps, benches and rounded corners easily, which makes mosaic the most flexible choice for free-form pools. Glass does not absorb water, keeps its colour for a long time, and several shades can be combined into patterns or gradients.

Mosaic’s weak point is the amount of grout. Every square metre contains a long run of joints, so grout quality is decisive. Epoxy or special cement-based grouts designed for pools and resistant to water and chemicals are chosen. Laying mosaic well takes experience: small irregularities in the surface show up immediately in glossy glass.

Ceramic and porcelain tiles: clean lines, tough surface

In rectangular pools, large or medium-format tiles create a calm, architectural look. There are fewer joints than with mosaic and the surface is easy to clean. Tiles for pools must have very low water absorption, be frost resistant and be declared suitable for pool use by the manufacturer.

Large tiles are hard to use on curves. Rounded corners and step edges require cutting or are finished in mosaic. On steps, benches and shallow areas, slip-resistant tiles are important for safety.

PVC liner: waterproofing and finish in one

A reinforced PVC liner is a single layer welded in place in the shell, acting as both waterproofing and decorative surface. The concrete does not need to be as precise as it would for tiles, and installation is relatively quick. In old pool renovations a liner is often a practical solution because it can be applied without completely stripping the existing finish.

Liners come in a wide range of colours and patterns, some imitating stone or mosaic textures. However, sharp objects, poor water chemistry and long periods standing empty in the sun can damage them. Small damage is usually repaired with a patch. Welded seams are visible up close, which is an aesthetic concern for some clients.

How colour affects the water

The finish colour sets the colour of the water. White and light grey finishes make water look light blue, the floor clearly visible and dirt quick to notice. Dark blue, green or graphite finishes give a deep, natural lake effect and absorb slightly more solar heat, while leaves and sediment on the floor are less visible.

Pick it while looking at the planting, the facade and the stone around the pool. Judging a small dry sample is misleading: colour looks different under water and in bright sun. Where possible, check a sample in a container of water in daylight.

Which finish for which pool

• Free-form shape with many curves: mosaic.
• Rectangular pool with simple architectural lines: porcelain tiles, with mosaic where needed.
• Renovating an old pool or fast installation: PVC liner.
• Shallow areas used a lot by children: slip-resistant surfaces.

Whatever finish you choose, the substrate matters just as much. Tiles and mosaic last only on a sound, flat surface whose waterproofing has been tested. The adhesive is a flexible type suited to pool conditions, and the pool is not filled before the curing time stated by the manufacturer has passed.

• The colour has been checked under water and in daylight.
• If a liner is chosen, repair patches and weld quality have been discussed.
